Microchip Delivers Advanced PMIC to Power AI and Computing Innovations
Microchip Technology Launches MCP16701 PMIC for High-Performance MPU and FPGA Applications
The accelerating integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into industrial, computing, and data center applications is driving an unprecedented demand for efficient and advanced power management solutions. In response, Microchip Technology, a leading provider of smart, connected, and secure embedded control and processing solutions, has introduced the MCP16701, a Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) designed to meet the stringent requirements of high-performance MPU and FPGA designers.
The MCP16701 integrates eight 1.5A buck converters that can be paralleled for increased current capacity, four 300mA internal Low Dropout Voltage Regulators (LDOs), and a controller to drive external MOSFETs. This highly integrated device achieves a remarkable 48% area reduction and requires less than 60% of the component count compared to discrete solutions. Housed in a compact 8mm x 8mm VQFN package, the MCP16701 offers a space-efficient and flexible power management solution for applications with limited board space. This versatile PMIC supports Microchip’s PIC64-GX MPU and PolarFire® FPGAs with a highly configurable feature set, catering to diverse power needs.
“With the launch of the MCP16701, Microchip is establishing a new benchmark in PMIC technology by delivering an unparalleled level of integration and flexibility,” stated Rudy Jaramillo, vice president of Microchip’s analog power and interface division. “This advanced PMIC is specifically designed for high-performance applications, empowering our customers to streamline their design process and enhance system efficiency.”
The MCP16701 features an I2C communication interface, simplifying and enhancing communication efficiency between the PMIC and other system components. It operates within a wide temperature range of TJ -40°C to +105°C, ensuring reliable performance in diverse environmental conditions. A key feature of the MCP16701 is its ability to dynamically change Vout levels for all converters in 12.5mV/25mV increments. This exceptional flexibility allows designers to fine-tune power delivery to meet specific application requirements, thereby optimizing overall system efficiency and performance.
The MCP16701 joins Microchip’s comprehensive family of PMIC products, including the MCP16502, MCP16501, and others, which are designed to power high-performance MPU applications targeting industrial computing, data centers, IoT, and edge AI.
